What Can and Can’t Go in a Dumpster? An Asheville Guide
Renting a roll-off is the easy part — what people ask about most is what they’re actually allowed to throw in it. Here’s a plain rundown of what goes in a dumpster around Asheville, what has to stay out, and what to do with the odd items in between.
The short version
Most household, remodel, and construction debris is fine to load — wood, drywall, furniture, flooring, roofing, brush, and general junk all go in. What has to stay out is anything hazardous: wet paint, chemicals, tires, batteries, and appliances that hold refrigerant. When you are not sure about an item, ask before you toss it, and we’ll give you a straight answer.
What you can put in a dumpster
✓ Goes in
- Furniture, mattresses, and household junk
- Drywall, lumber, cabinets, and fixtures
- Flooring, tile, and carpet
- Roofing shingles
- Brush, branches, and yard waste
- Small amounts of concrete, brick, and dirt
✕ Stays out
- Wet paint, solvents, and chemicals
- Tires
- Car and lithium batteries
- Fridges and AC units (refrigerant)
- Propane tanks and flammables
- Asbestos and medical waste
That covers the vast majority of jobs. A roll-off dumpster handles remodel and cleanout debris without a problem — it’s the hazardous and specialty items that need another home.
Why some items are off-limits
The banned list is not random. Hazardous materials like paint, oil, and chemicals can leak and contaminate a load, which landfills will not accept. Tires and batteries have their own recycling rules. Refrigerators and air conditioners hold refrigerant that has to be drained by a certified tech before disposal. And asbestos and medical waste need special handling for safety. Tossing these in a rented dumpster can lead to rejected loads and extra fees, so it’s worth sorting them out first.
Where those items go instead
- Paint & chemicals — dry out latex paint and trash it, or take oil-based paint and chemicals to Buncombe County’s household hazardous waste drop-off.
- Tires — most tire shops and the county transfer station take them for a small fee.
- Batteries — auto parts stores take car batteries; many hardware stores collect the rest.
- Fridges & AC units — a technician drains the refrigerant, then they can be scrapped.
- Electronics — look for an e-waste recycling event or drop-off.

Heavy stuff: concrete, brick, and dirt
These are allowed, but they add up fast on the scale and can push a load over its weight limit. For a small patch of broken concrete, mixing a little into a general load is fine. For a driveway tear-out or a full patio, a dedicated heavy-debris can is the way to go — see our guide on a roll-off dumpster for concrete removal. If you are weighing sizes, our dumpster size guide breaks down what fits what, and our pricing guide covers the cost.
A quick word on placement
On your own driveway, a dumpster needs no permit. If it has to sit on a public street, the City of Asheville asks for a right-of-way permit first. Either way, we check your spot when you book so the container lands where it works for you. For bigger jobs, our construction and residential dumpster pages have the details.
